LUDLOW Assembly Rooms has taken a major step towards securing its future after reaching a deal with Shropshire County Council which is pouring more than £250,000 into the arts and community building over the next four years. The council has committed to providing £90,000 for the running of the Assembly Rooms in the coming financial year. This will be followed by more that £80,000 the following year and over £70,000 in the final year of the agreement. This is in addition to an allocation of £70,000 that is being used for a major refurbishment of the building to be completed by end beginning of the summer. Work on improving the interior is on-going and the final phase – the refurbishment of the auditorium, will be undertaken when the facility is closed during the weekend of the May Fair. A new digital projector was installed just before Christmas and has transformed the experience for cinema fans. Also on the cards is a move to provide an entrance to the venue from Castle Street using the door through which people pass when going into the museum and visitor information centre. But both the museum and visitor information centre will stay in the Assembly Rooms ruling out a proposal to open the building to a major restaurant franchise. However, the venue is working on a scheme to provide light meals and snacks. “We are pleased and relieved that Shropshire council has confirmed its grant funding until 2015,” said Mike Penn, chairman of the Assembly Rooms board. “This gives us the time we need to develop new income streams to replace the lost Arts Council funding, and give the Rooms a viable future.” Recruitment has also started to find a new director to replace Paula Redway who stood down last year. The venue employs more than 20 full and part time staff.

A short season of films is being planned for the Tenbury Regal. Due to a short delay in starting the refurbishment project, a few weeks have become available for showing films.
The first is the multi-award winning KINGS SPEECH starting on Monday 9th May for three nights.
